Staples Construction is a commercial general contractor, building unique, complex real estate projects throughout the U.S.
Their existing website, which PlanetMagpie designed years ago, needed an update to better reflect their marketing team’s new strategy. In the years since it was designed, Staples had expanded and completed construction projects in completely
new industry verticals. This brought about a desire to reflect their expanded industry scope and appeal to a wider customer base.
Also, commercial construction customers had changed the way they sourced contractors. Polling people on Twitter, for example. This moved them further into mobile browsing, so an increased focus on improved mobile UX was needed.
The Staples team decided the time was right to move to a new CMS platform and a new look & feel. So, they contacted PlanetMagpie's Creative Lab.
Through collaboration with the client, we determined that the new Staples website would have:
- A new visual design that transitioned the Staples Construction brand identity to a minimalist aesthetic to increase focus on project photography
- Mobile-first user experience while also taking advantage of benefits of larger screens for desktop users
- Custom dropdown navigation menu that organized the large number of categories with ability to add more in the future
- More options available to explore projects, including menus, on-page tiles, search, and filtering capabilities
- Increased number of featured project pages with new flexible layouts capable of facilitating any number of photos or copy
- Increase cross-page linking between related content types with less dependence on the navigation bar to explore the company
- A more flexible and dynamic news section with varying tile sizes for the index page and flexible layouts for articles
- A nationwide canvas, showing how far-reaching Staples Construction had grown in its 20+ years
The Build Strategy
Such a website would require heavily customized page templates and fluid content blocks, to stay flexible enough. Its existing Content Management System could handle it, but not without a lot of extra development.
So, we proposed switching to WordPress, to take advantage of its extreme flexibility. They agreed.
The project came together in stages. While development for the page structures & navigation took place, PlanetMagpie and Staples revised existing content and added more material. Design work bookended development, providing creative direction and
user experience tuning.
The new StaplesConstruction.com went live in March 2024.

As with all new PlanetMagpie Creative Lab websites, StaplesConstruction.com is now:
- Reflective of the marketing team’s updated branding and communication goals
- Fully responsive on all devices, by 2024 conventions
- Updated to modern SEO standards
- Optimized for mobile load times
Staples now has a website with near-infinite growth potential. They can showcase hundreds of new construction projects as their teams continue to build across the nation.
