Joining the millions who travel during the Summer? If you're bringing devices – work or personal – you'll need to keep an eye on them. Device theft happens all the time at every point in the travel ecosystem, from airports to hotels.
Here are Magpie's top tips to protect your devices and data while traveling.
For Laptops & Tablets:
- If you’re taking your laptop with you on vacation this summer, make sure you have a full cloud backup before you go.
- Affix a Tile or Apple AirTag to your laptop (or its sleeve/bag) to help you locate it in case of loss or theft.
- Keep a close eye on your laptop in these “Top 3 Laptop Theft” locations:
- Free/Public Wi-Fi Areas. It's easy for a thief to grab your laptop and get away while you’re in a relaxed environment and out of your element.
- Passing Through Airport Security. Thieves take advantage of TSA security chaos on busy travel days and can grab your device while they are collecting their own belongings. Get TSA-Precheck so you don’t have to remove your laptop from your bag.
- Hotel Rooms. Always lock up your laptop in the hotel room safe.
For Mobile Phones:
- Make a backup of your phone’s photos and videos before traveling.
- Ensure your phone is “password protected”.
- Enable Find My Phone so you can use GPS to locate your lost phone.
- Share Your Location with friends so they can help you find it.
- Write down your phone’s IMEI or MEID number; you can use that number to get your phone put on a Missing Phone list in case someone tries to use it or finds it.
Happy (summer) computing!
